the space that might change (you)
- a Latin word. It means hypothetically marked space in the air; in ancient Rome there were various kinds of prophets: some of them foretold watching the bird's flight. With wooden sticks in there hands they were seating for hours looking at the sky and observing birds. Prophets drawing over with their sticks were imagined quadrants in the air (templums) making complicated nets of meanings and waiting for birds to "fall into" wonder cages of the sky. TEMPLE and TEMPO are words that are closed to TEMPLUM with their meaning. Temple is: 1. Holy place 2. Something that is cut of 3. Marked or cut part of space or time TEMPLATE: a pattern, usu of thin board or metal, used as a guide for cutting metal, stone, wood... There are words that have opposite meaning but at the same time they are connected with templum: TEMPER: metaphorically means something solid, being angry or upset TEMPERANCE: practice of controlling and restraining one's behavior So, TEMPLUM is something as a piece of Einstein's space-time or something as Chinese's Jin and Jang
Templum, as a small self-published workshop, or as a radical alternative institution, stands opposite the existing system of cultural institutions in Macedonia. It has existed since 1990. Since 1993 we have been appearing officially both on the market and in public, as a part Koma - a studio for graphic design. In the period between 1993- 1995 we published about 50 books (each about 100 pages) in several editions (The Postmodern, Local Scene, Genre). Danail Harms, Julio Cortazar, Vladimir Nabokov, Thomas Pynchon, Dashiel Hammet, Ambrouse Bierce, Franc Kafka, Wilhelm Bush, Jean Baudrillard, Francois Lyotard were presented for the first time in Macedonian. In that period we published around 50 books of young Macedonian debutants. At the beginning of 1994 we started the magazine Margina, whose main aim is to spread the ideas for decentralising culture. Since then Margina has become the central core of our activity. In January 1995 we started a magazine dedicated to alternative and art comic, named Lift. The first book of our ambitiously imagined edition for contemporary theory, named 20/21st Century, appeared at the end of 1999. During the year 2000 we have published 4 new titles in that edition. Five new books are planned for 2001. Templum has published over a hundred titles by now.
