The Helnwein retrospective was the most successful exhibition of a living artist in the history of the Albertina.

Radical Beauty radically questions our perception of beauty, attractiveness and aesthetics. In this globally unique photo project, over 60 internationally renowned fashion and art photographers worked together with people with Down syndrome to develop individual images and photo series. Surprising and unique portraits were created in professional studio conditions. The protagonists include experienced performers such as actresses Sarah Gordy (UK) and Lily Moore (USA), but the majority of them lead a life outside the limelight.

Helnwein imitates the alleged incorruptibility of a camera using the means of painting. In fact, the artist uses photographs as a template and thus comes even closer to reality. But it is precisely painting that relegates all depictions to the realm of fiction. The precision and cleanliness of his working method transform dirty reality into meditative, quiet images that, when viewed, inevitably maneuver us into a dilemma between beauty and horror, admiration and disgust, attraction and protest. Helnwein's works are timeless statements against appropriation, aggression, destruction and violence.

Representational Art has been an integral part of the visual arts for centuries, experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. The works depict the world around us, often with a realistic approach or accurate representation, from the human condition to social and cultural issues, to the perception of our surroundings. Representational painting has been used to depict a wide range of emotions, stories, and themes, becoming a powerful form of expression that conveys messages of social and political importance, as well as capturing the beauty of the everyday. Popular culture has also often been inspired by representational paintings, especially cinema, through films that explore themes and issues such as romance, beauty, fear, and the human condition.

Contemplating Character explores the evolution of portraiture in 81 works on paper by 68 artists. Executed by some of the most famous portraitists in Europe and America, the works range in date from the 18th century to present day and encompasses the many art styles and movements during this expanse of time.

Die Ausstellung The Face in der ALBERTINA MODERN zeigt ausgewählte Werke zeitgenössischer Porträtfotografie aus der Sammlung der ALBERTINA. Die Fotografien von internationalen und nationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zeigen, wie facettenreich das Thema Porträt sein kann: Der Bogen reicht von eindringlichen Bildnisstudien berühmter Persönlichkeiten über Porträtaufnahmen von KünstlerInnen in ihren Ateliers bis hin zu Arbeiten, die sich mittels serieller Aufnahmen eingehend mit den Porträtierten und ihrem Lebensumfeld auseinandersetzen. Über die gezeigten Fotografien werden Themen wie kulturelle Identität, persönliche Beziehungen, diverse Lebenswelten aber auch Fragen der Herkunft und des eigenen Ichs verhandelt. Zu sehen sind u.a. Werke von Richard Avedon, Gottfried Helnwein, Chuck Close und Franz Hubmann.

Eine Auswahl seiner Werke zeigt das Koblenzer Ludwig Museum nun seit Sonntag unter dem Titel „Schlaf der Vernunft“.

The exhibition is dedicated for the first time to this level of reflection in Helnwein’s work and first summarizes those dark paintings in which the image is developed out of blackness and deep blue (as a romantic keynote) and leads over to the atrocities of the Nazi regime, in that in particular the experiments on imprisoned persons and those segregated into psychiatric wards underpin the racial ideology. The central motif of almost all of Helnwein’s pictures is the innocent child, above all defenselessly at the mercy of adults. The childlike nature, from the innocence of the early years to young girls who themselves take up arms in his more recent works, shows differentiated facets of the soul that are stirring, emotionally gripping, and technically brilliantly realized.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis the world premiere of PASSION could not take place at the PalmKlang Festival. In these challenging times we were inspired by a main message of PASSION: The hope for resurrection. Therefore we joined forces with other art forms and developed a new concept for the premiere; we exchanged the stage for a museum and the audience for a camera. On the 3rd and 4th of July 2020 we spent the night at the Albertina Museum in Vienna. Surrounded by and inspired by the art of Gottfried Helnwein, we brought PASSION to life. The result is this film, a resurrection of our artistic beliefs and hopes.

Die Ausstellung zeigt mit 170 KünstlerInnen Positionen von 1900 bis heute, die kritisch, realistisch differenziert, aber auch mit viel Ironie und Humor kindliches Glück ebenso wie Frustration dokumentieren. Koblenz, 14.12.2020, 17:45 Uhr Von Schwarzer Romantik bis Futurismus: Ludwig Museum stellt Programm 2021 vor „Mit Ludwig geht nicht nur der größte, sondern auch der menschlichste Mäzen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wenn Sammeln Kunst ist, dann war Ludwig das größte Genie dieses Metiers, gewissermaßen Picasso und Walt Disney in einem.“ Diese Zeilen schrieb Gottfried Helnwein am 1. August 1996 in einem sehr persönlichen Nachruf zum Tod von Peter Ludwig. Der Künstler gehörte zu den Ersten, deren Werke Ludwig und seine Ehefrau Irene sammelten. Deshalb ist es nur folgerichtig, wenn das Ludwig Museum Koblenz vom 14. März bis zum 6. Juni mit einer Helnwein-Schau in das Ausstellungsjahr 2021 startet.

Mouth, lips, tongue, and teeth; speech, pain, and screaming; eating, devouring, spitting, and spewing; lust and passion: The oral cavity is a literally stimulating bodily zone. Not only have science and medicine always been involved in the exploration of the oral cavity, but also art and cultural history, from antiquity to the present. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg traces this broadly diversified path of the history of the motif within the frameworks the exhibition On Everyone’s Lips. From Pieter Bruegel to Cindy Sherman. With over 250 works of art by, among others, Albrecht Dürer, Pablo Picasso, Max Klinger, Marina Abramović, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois and Gottfried Helnwein. it is the most comprehensive exhibition on the theme of the oral cavity in art in Germany to date.

The Beginning bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über eine der innovativsten Epochen österreichischer Kunstgeschichte: vom Wiener Phantastischen Realismus über die frühe Abstraktion, den Wiener Aktionismus, die kinetische und konkrete Kunst sowie die österreichische Spielvariante der Pop Art bis zu dem für Wien so kennzeichnenden gesellschaftskritischen Realismus.

Disney-Chef Bob Iger steuerte ein Micky-Maus-Bild des britischen Künstlers Damien Hirst als Leihgabe bei. In der Ausstellung sind auch Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud und der Österreicher Gottfried Helnwein mit einem riesengroßen Porträt eines grimmig grinsenden Micky vertreten.

The focus of Albertina Contemporary lies on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of postmodern art. In this year’s presentation of contemporary output at the Albertina, works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Gottfried Helnwein, Alex Katz, Kenton Nelson, Imi Knoebel, Maria Lassnig, and others take centre-stage.

The exhibition focuses on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of art after 1945. Around 80 masterpieces serve to illustrate the multifaceted nature of postmodernism, ranging from Hyperrealism to abstraction and from color aesthetics to political themes, while also providing a clear impression of the complex parallel trends of the past few decades. Works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig and others take centre-stage. A generous donation by Gottfried Helnwein has made possible to show seven high-quality paintings by the famous Austrian artist at the exhibition.

For the first time, the Albertina is staging an exhibition on two levels of the museum: over 2,500 square meters’ floor space host a broad survey of the Albertina’s collecting strategy for contemporary art. From the over 10,000 works acquired over the past 18 years, around 350 works by 55 artists have been selected for this presentation.

In 1971/72 Gerhard Richter created a series of 48 iconic portraits of men that influenced Modernity, in a photorealistic manner based on black and white photographs in encyclopedias. Exactly 20 years later, in 1991/92 Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein replied with a cycle of 48 portraits that depict exclusively women of historic influence.  In contrast to Gerhard Richter’s men in gray, Helnwein painted his women in fiery red. Both Helnwein's and Gerhard Richter's works, which are part of the collection of the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, are being shown together face to face for the first time as the centerpiece of the 'exhibition Undeniable Me', at Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague.

Children are literally saddled with the sadness and possibly the sins of their off-screen elders in Gottfried Helnwein’s haunting portrait of a child in military uniform. Helnwein’s doe-eyed child is half in shadow, one side of the face possibly bruised; the design on her jacket lapel suggesting a military uniform.

Die Zurschaustellung des eigenen Körpers als Verwesungsmasse beginnt mit den Selbstporträts von George Grosz als Suizidgestalt im Kaffeehaus und reicht über die wie durch den Fleischwolf gedrehten Konterfeis eines Francis Bacon bis hin zur Leichenfledderei am eigenen Leib bei Günter Brus, Kurt Kren oder Frank Tovey, dem jüngst verstorbenen Enfant terrible der experimentellen New-Wave-Szene der 1980er Jahre. Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. Von dieser Krankheit erlöst zu werden durch den Tod ist eine Unmöglichkeit, denn die Krankheit und deren Qual und der Tod ist gerade, nicht sterben zu können.” So ist die Geschichte der Moderne nicht zuletzt auch eine Erfolgsgeschichte der Melancholie und des Eindringens ihres schwarzen Spuks in die letzten Paradiese des Seins- und Weltvertrauens.

The exhibition focuses on macabre topics and their relations to the world of beauty and glamour in the art and visual culture, starting from the 1990s. The main connecting thread is the body: how it can be manipulated and (ab)used in visual-cultural practices. We will be showing a large amount of photography from the 1990s til today, as well as the videos, objects and costumes that meet the subject.

Konsequent und virtuos. Technische Meisterschaft und auch die Konsequenz einer packenden sozialkritischen Thematik offenbaren sich in dieser Ausstellung: Gewalt, Schmerz, Verletzung werden dargestellt. Den Körper ebenso wie die Psyche betreffend. Helnwein dokumentiert hier in Linz einen künstlerischen Reifegrad, der eine weitere Steigerung kaum vorstellbar macht. Seine Eingriffe sind von einer schmerzhaften Unmittelbarkeit, deren emotionale Energie weit über die großen Bildformate hinaus den Raum und sein Publikum ergreift. FACE IT - die erste Museums-Ausstellung Gottfried Helnweins seit mehr als 20 Jahren in Österreich ist mit 38.000 BesucherInnen nach knapp drei Monaten (10.3. - 5.6.2006) am Pfingstmontag im Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz zu Ende gegangen. Face It kann somit als die meist besuchte Schau eines zeitgenössischen Künstlers im Lentos verbucht werden.

Über 50 zeitgenössische KünstlerInnen thematisieren das Menschenbild

Mit dem Erwerb der ersten hundert Kunstwerke legte die Stadt Linz im Jahr 1953 den Grundstein zur Neuen Galerie der Stadt Linz, der Vorgängerinstitution des LENTOS. Seither wurden die Bestände kontinuierlich um markante Positionen der jeweils zeitgenössischen Kunst sowie um historische Nachkäufe erweitert. Das LENTOS verfügt nun über eine Schatzkammer, die mit etwa 1.700 Gemälden und Skulpturen sowie rund 12.000 Grafiken und 1.200 Beispielen künstlerischer Fotografie reichhaltig bestückt ist.

Historian Peter Selz has compared Gottfried Helnwein's tortured, screaming, and bandaged self-portraits to Messerschmidt's sculptural self-portraits, but the artist has said, " The reason why I took up the subject of self-portraits and why I have put myself on stage was to function as a kind of representative. There is nothing autobiographical, no therapy, and it says nothing about me personally. I am always available as a model." ...

Schon 1963 malten ein Künstlerkollege und ich uns die schaurige Zukunft eines freischaffenden Künstlers aus. Es ging bei dem Gespräch weniger um die Finanzen als um die Notwendigkeit des sich bis ins Tiefste Fallenlassenmüssens. Ich kam damals auf die Idee, so etwas wie ein »Konditionstraining für Genies« zu erfinden. Rückblickend muß ich sagen, daß ich ganz wenige Künstler kenne, die dieses imaginäre Trainingsprogramm durchgehalten haben. Einer von ihnen ist Gottfried HeInwein.

..A clarity of vision in his subject matter was emerging in Helnwein's art that was to stay consistent throughout his career. His subject matter is the human condition. The metaphor for his art, although it included self-portraits, is dominated by the image of the child, but not the carefree innocent child of popular imagination. Helnwein instead created the profoundly disturbing yet compellingly provocative image of the wounded child. The child scarred physically and the child scarred emotionally from within. . Through December 11, the museum is presenting “Pop’d From The Panel,” a exploration of how comics and cartoon art have influenced the modern pop-art movement. The nearly 20 artists with works in the exhibit include provocative Mexican-born Enrique Chagoya, modern “street artist” Ron English, and such iconic contemporary figures as Roy Lichtenstein, Gottfried Helnwein, Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, and Christo. There are 26 two- and three-dimensional works in the exhibition, which is in the Downstairs Changing Gallery.

Gottfried Helnwein looks more like a rock star than an internationally acclaimed artist. Dressed all in black, with a bandanna around his head and dark glasses hiding his eyes, he resembles, in a superficial way, Bono. Like Bono, he is concerned about the most troubling issues of our times: violence, inhumanity and oppression. There is a cinematic quality to all of Helnwein's works, which seem to be projected on a wide screen. These "stilled cinematic moments," as Crocker curator Diana Daniels calls them, are powerfully affecting. "He deals with difficult subjects in a way that isn't propagandistic," Daniels said. "It's an open-ended way of dealing with historic subjects that are in danger of slipping away from us." Many of the images are very disturbing, and the museum has issued a warning that some images may be challenging for sensitive or younger viewers. But the show is a powerful one, posing questions we all need to contemplate.

The exhibition GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN - INFERNO OF THE INNOCENTS at the Crocker Art Museum opens on Friday, January 28th from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Like a modern-day Goya, Gottfried Helnwein’s art addresses themes of inhumanity, violence and the virtue of personal expression. Over more than four decades, the artist has pursued a singular, radical vision realized in monumental paintings and photographs.

TOP 10 The Gottfried Helnwein exhibition "The Child" at the Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco Fine Arts Museums, July) was chosen as the most important show of a contemporary artist in 2004. "In the first of two shows (the other at the Modernism Gallery in November), Helnwein's large format, photo-realist images of children of various demeanors boldly probed the subconscious. Innocence, sexuality, victimization and haunting self-possession surge and flicker in Helnwein's unnerving work."

During the past several years, the concepts of decadence have begun to appear more and more in art theory, often in relation to current art. Decadence is one of the continual properties of modern art. The commonness of the concept of decadence, or its parallel existence outside of the sphere of art, also enables new methodological processes and combinations, and discovers new territories and relationships. Decadent art is excessive, it exceeds the level of what is generally acceptable, and it provocatively demolishes the most sensitive taboos. Decadence is also firmly connected to the clear stance of outsider individualism. Starting on the 1970's, we can monitor the continual effort of the artists like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Nobuyoshi Araki, Jake a Dinos Chapman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Damien Hirst, Zhang Peng, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Gottfried Helnwein etc. to work with typical decadent themes.

Auf 1.200 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche wird den Fragen nach Außenseitertum und Selbststilisierung von Künstlern nachgegangen. Kuratorin der bis 26. April 2011 angesetzten, auf Basis der eigenen Sammlung des Hauses konzipierten Schau ist Alexandra Schantl. Der Titel "Ich ist ein anderer" entstammt einem Zitat des Dichters Arthur Rimbaud, kunsthistorischer Ausgangspunkt ist Egon Schieles Selbstporträt von 1910, erläutert das Museum in einer Aussendung.

A highly satisfying survey of his work at the Legion of Honor museum titled "The Child" was dominated by images of children, as was a current exhibition of his more recent work at Modernism.

200 Werke von mehr als 120 Künstlern

Auf rund 3.000 m2 Ausstellungsfläche spannt die Präsentation einen reichen Bogen vom französischen Impressionismus bis zur Kunst der Gegenwart. Mit wichtigen Werken des späten Picasso, Exponaten von Mark Rothko oder Francis Bacon führt die Ausstellung bis zur Kunst der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und findet ihren Abschluss mit Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer und Gottfried Helnwein. Die rund 200 Exponate stammen aus der über 30.000 Arbeiten umfassenden Sammlung an Gegenwartskunst der Albertina und der Sammlung Batliner.

Mit der Ausstellung «Nach 1970 - Österreichische Kunst aus der Albertina» setzt die Albertina eine Reihe fort, die sie im Vorjahr mit «Kunst nach 1970» begonnen hat. Diesmal liegt das besondere Augenmerk auf Österreich. Gezeigt werden rund 220 Werke, die einen weiteren Einblick in die insgesamt über 20'000 Arbeiten umfassende Sammlung an Gegenwartskunst der Albertina geben. Mit dieser Präsentation werden auch die neu errichteten Ausstellungsräume der Albertina im zweiten Obergeschoss eröffnet. An alternative title to “Angels Sleeping” for this exhibition could be “All Hail to the Wounded Child,” as many of the works center on irreparably wounded children (both externally and internally) as the innocent victims of war. The children in Helnwien’s works may also represent the lost or destroyed child in all of us, not only as victims of war, but as victims of modern society, with all its mindless violence and perverse attraction to aggressive mobs and disturbances. The exhibition Angels Sleeping is a thematic cross-section, predominantly of the painting work of the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. The five sections of the exhibition present the fundamental circuits of Helnwein’s work. The introduction comprises heads – faces, including the artist’s iconic self-portrait, painfully acute metaphors of the limits on freedom of expression in Austria in the 1970s and 80s. The artist’s merciless approach to the residues of the Nazi past of his country is a further theme, developed in monochrome, hyperrealistic painting. The central and still extremely relevant theme of Helnwein’s work however is das malträtierte Kind, the child exposed to suffering. The author engages with this theme in various positions from his early works from the 1970s up to the present day. His collection of works on this theme is given the largest space. Violence committed against children, in contrast with their passive exposure, distressed astonishment and impossibility of defending themselves against the world of adults is partially shifted into a further position, ironically entitled Art in Amerika. This presents the relationships of the white, frequently uniformed “majority” to other ethnic groups and minorities, particularly in the United States, sharpened by the photographic precision of the images.

Various themes and concerns are explored by the artists including gender, social, and ethnic identity perception of the self (Su-en Wong); distortions of scale (Eisenman and Philips); use of cartoon or highly stylized imagery (Wesley, Ali, Fujita, Ofili); utilizing the superhero image (Warhol and Ramos); revisiting the Surreal figure (Tyson, Dingle, Quinn, Gormley); composite images of fictional characters (Kauper, Yuskavage, Currin, Lijun, Schütte); emotionally charged faces and forms (Flannigan, Gottfried Helnwein); a twisted notion of reality that reflects a dark world view (McLane, Middlebrook); images of the human form moving through time and space (Herring, Nauman); and the spirit of Neo-expressionism (Clemente, Brown).

Helnwein was deeply influenced by the Holocaust, as well as by popular cultural references like comics and rock music. His imagery is unsettling, dark, and deeply compelling, carrying powerful messages of political disturbance and social unease.

The exhibit will explore the intersection of art, the body, and medical procedures, with the implicit fear of bodily pain (real or imagined) as a major theme. The human body is vulnerable and mortal, yet it is also the biological basis of human existence. "Body Anxious" includes works by artists from around the world, in, often, unconventional media, who examine the anxieties associated with medical procedures and instruments, and other experiences that remind us of our shared precarious biological condition. Artists include: Gottfried Helnwein, Kiki Smith, Diana Falchuk, James R. Southard, Drew Sellers, Cristin Millet and Chiharu Shiota.

An urban oasis — The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is San Francisco's most seductively situated museum From July 31-Nov. 28, the museum will present paintings, drawings and photographs by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. The exhibit, titled "The Child: Works by Gottfried Helnwein," looks at children as innocent, yet exploited.

Das Linzer Kunstmuseum Lentos schmückt sich bereits für das Kulturhauptstadtjahr 2009. Die sechs Räume der ständigen Ausstellung werden im Laufe dieses Jahres gemeinsam mit Künstlern neu gestaltet. Den Anfang machte der Linzer Maler und Filmemacher Dietmar Brehm. Er paarte „alte und neue Klassiker“ und wollte die „Provokateure“ der Kunst ihrer Zeit in den Mittelpunkt rückten. Konsequent und virtuos. Technische Meisterschaft und auch die Konsequenz einer packenden sozialkritischen Thematik offenbaren sich in dieser Ausstellung: Gewalt, Schmerz, Verletzung werden dargestellt. Den Körper ebenso wie die Psyche betreffend. Helnwein dokumentiert hier in Linz einen künstlerischen Reifegrad, der eine weitere Steigerung kaum vorstellbar macht. Seine Eingriffe sind von einer schmerzhaften Unmittelbarkeit, deren emotionale Energie weit über die großen Bildformate hinaus den Raum und sein Publikum ergreift. Pop Art made Mickey and Donald into icons, and artists continue to be inspired by Disney’s legacy today. This section shows some thirty works based on Disney characters, created by a diverse group of modern and contemporary artists that includes Gary Baseman, Christian Boltanski, Gottfried Helnwein, Bertrand Lavier, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Peter Saul and Andy Warhol.

Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning... With its huge size, hyperrealist style, and disturbing content, this unsettling work bestows a psychological anxiety accompanied by a strong magnetic pull. Confronting it, we tend to stare-entranced by both its beauty and its seductive, malevolent overtones...

La manière la plus dialectique pour recycler, détourner, admirer et critiquer tout à la fois, demeure le médium photographique. Gottfried Helnwein propose des images inconvenantes, qui renvoient la pérennité des objets dérivés de Disney à des statuts diversement fétichistes: images saintes que l'on prie ou statuettes lubriques qui promettent des extases ambiguës.
