To celebrate the 75th birthday of Gottfried Helnwein, the ALBERTINA Museum is showing a large-scale exhibition of his output from the past three decades. The Vienna-born artist Gottfried Helnwein’s oeuvre is characterized by his interest in the themes of pain, injury, and violence. A central motif of his is the figure of the vulnerable and defenseless child as a proxy of sorts, one that embodies all psychological and societal anxieties.

In collaboration with the Vienna Insurance Group, Gottfried Helnwein transformed the Vienna Ringtower into an oversized call against violence. On a total of 3,000 m², Helnwein makes the experience of violence among women and children visible.

Representational Art has been an integral part of the visual arts for centuries, experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. The works depict the world around us, often with a realistic approach or accurate representation, from the human condition to social and cultural issues, to the perception of our surroundings. Representational painting has been used to depict a wide range of emotions, stories, and themes, becoming a powerful form of expression that conveys messages of social and political importance, as well as capturing the beauty of the everyday. Popular culture has also often been inspired by representational paintings, especially cinema, through films that explore themes and issues such as romance, beauty, fear, and the human condition.

Contemplating Character explores the evolution of portraiture in 81 works on paper by 68 artists. Executed by some of the most famous portraitists in Europe and America, the works range in date from the 18th century to present day and encompasses the many art styles and movements during this expanse of time.

Der international bekannte Künstler Gottfried Helnwein setzt am Stephansdom ein Zeichen gegen Gewalt an Frauen und Mädchen. Ab Dienstag wird am Südturm des Doms ein großflächiges Plakat angebracht, auf dem der immer wieder mit Schockeffekten arbeitende gebürtige Wiener ein verletztes Mädchen mit Blutflecken darstellt. Darunter die um Empathie werbende Aufschrift "My Sister" und das Jesuswort aus dem Matthäusevangelium "Was ihr für meine geringsten Schwestern und Brüder getan habt, habt ihr mir getan" (Mt 25,40).

Die Ausstellung The Face in der ALBERTINA MODERN zeigt ausgewählte Werke zeitgenössischer Porträtfotografie aus der Sammlung der ALBERTINA. Die Fotografien von internationalen und nationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zeigen, wie facettenreich das Thema Porträt sein kann: Der Bogen reicht von eindringlichen Bildnisstudien berühmter Persönlichkeiten über Porträtaufnahmen von KünstlerInnen in ihren Ateliers bis hin zu Arbeiten, die sich mittels serieller Aufnahmen eingehend mit den Porträtierten und ihrem Lebensumfeld auseinandersetzen. Über die gezeigten Fotografien werden Themen wie kulturelle Identität, persönliche Beziehungen, diverse Lebenswelten aber auch Fragen der Herkunft und des eigenen Ichs verhandelt. Zu sehen sind u.a. Werke von Richard Avedon, Gottfried Helnwein, Chuck Close und Franz Hubmann.
