Der Herbst wird von "Matisse und die Fauves" dominiert. 50 Leihgeber aus aller Welt steuern zu der großen Ausstellung bei, die rund 50 Werke von Henri Matisse sowie 100 Werke seiner Freunde zeigt.

Mendelsohn would not comment on any specifics, but we've heard that the painting already is complete, and that the well-known artist Gottfried Helnwein did it. Schwarzenegger is fond of Helnwein's work, and had his landscape painting of the Mojave Desert hanging in the governor's office.

Auxiliary Magazine: Many pieces of your work are intimate glimpses to fascist figures and groups. Is this a theme you still feel is relevant? Helnwein: Mussolini once said: "Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power". Well, look around - does it look like there is a growing influence of bankers and big corporations on our governments and our lives? The new Fascists will not come as grim looking brutes in daemonic black uniforms and boots, they will wear slick suits and ties, and they will be smiling.

We see the painter and designer jousting with the lighting designer over what will prove to be Helnwein’s greatest coup de theater, a hypnotic final-act tableau of dozens of “dead children” suspended in black space. This time there can be little doubt that Helnwein’s judgment is correct; even on screen the effect is startling and eerily beautiful.

One of the great things about this documentary is that, while many out there might be familiar with Helnwein’s artwork or installations, they may not be familiar with where his ideas come from, or what it’s like when he works. In that way, the film is a wonderful look at a stunning contemporary artist.

The sets and costumes designed by the artist are indeed visually impressive, especially a haunting image of children suspended over the stage like ascending angels.

It’s fascinating to watch Helnwein, unaccustomed to creative compromise, navigate the details and politics of a large-scale theatrical production, whether by rolling up his sleeves to daub cobalt onto a foam boulder so that it matches a craggy Caspar David Friedrich scene or micromanaging the stage makeup. In the end, Helnwein is pleased. “It brought all of the children I have painted before together,” he says of the opera’s fourth act. “I treat the staging like a canvas, but it’s three-dimensional and everything moves.”

When the powers behind the 2010 Tel Aviv production of Hanoch Levin's Holocaust opera The Child Dreams sought a designer, it seemed like plain sailing to bring on the Austrian provocateur Gottfried Helnwein, distinguished alumnus of what he calls "the same academy that rejected Adolf Hitler twice—which is, of course, the biggest mistake that any university has ever made in history."

Recorriéndola, uno siente una opresión en las entrañas, una forma de angustia. De eso algo sabemos todos, es la angustia existencial que anida en lo hondo de cualquier persona.

Helnwein has produced an impressive body of work, largely informed by the horrors of the Holocaust. It was the themes and sensitivities of his oeuvre that inspired the Israeli Opera to commission Helnwein’s designs for an ambitious new production. Lisa Kirk Colburn documents the visual artist’s sometime dramatic collaborative process in Gottfried Helnwein and the Dreaming Child (trailer here), which opens this Friday in New York. In a telling historical irony, Helnwein was accepted by the art academy that famously rejected Hitler. Coming of age at a time the Holocaust simply was not discussed in Austria, Helnwein discovered the truth on his own. The revelation profoundly influenced his work both as a student and a mature artist. Images of children in various states of vulnerability reappear over and over in his photo-realist paintings. Not surprisingly, Helnwein had a deep affinity for Hanoch Levin’s allegorical play, The Dreaming Child and its Helnweinesque title character.

Pero en la exposición llamada El canto de la aurora, que se presentará en la galería Hilario Galguera, no esperen encontrar escenas obvias. El artista vienés -conocido ampliamente por su trabajo con músicos como Rammstein y Marilyn Manson- mostrará 12 pinturas hiperrealistas, inspiradas por el espíritu de la Europa de la post guerra, donde vemos imágenes de niñas que muestran la inocencia de la infancia, pero de una manera sutil pero conmovedora también la violencia y la destrucción. Hablamos con Hilario Galguera sobre lo que propone Helnwein en esta exposición.  

A public installation of Helnwein's monumental photographic works at Plaza de la República, as well as a show of small formats in Paseo Cimentación, a gallery located in the Monumento a la Revolución foundations. This marks the start of a series of cultural activities entitled REvoluciónArte inside this iconic building.

Es ging bei dem Gespräch weniger um die Finanzen als um die Notwendigkeit des sich bis ins Tiefste Fallenlassenmüssens. Ich kam damals auf die Idee, so etwas wie ein »Konditionstraining für Genies« zu erfinden. Rückblickend muß ich sagen, daß ich ganz wenige Künstler kenne, die dieses imaginäre Trainingsprogramm durchgehalten haben. Einer von ihnen ist Gottfried HeInwein.

Gottfried Helnwein and The Dreaming Child offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the creation of The Child Dreams, an opera designed by world-famous Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein for the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv in 2010. The Child Dreams is based on the play written by Israel's most celebrated playwright, Hanoch Levin, who died in 1999.

..A clarity of vision in his subject matter was emerging in Helnwein's art that was to stay consistent throughout his career. His subject matter is the human condition. The metaphor for his art, although it included self-portraits, is dominated by the image of the child, but not the carefree innocent child of popular imagination. Helnwein instead created the profoundly disturbing yet compellingly provocative image of the wounded child. The child scarred physically and the child scarred emotionally from within. . Verschwommene Umrisse, leicht gelbstichig, schemenhaft - bei Polaroid-Bildern gibt es immer diesen kurzen Spannungsmoment, bevor nach einigen Sekunden das Bild sichtbar wird. Ein paar Mal hin- und hergewedelt, schon wird aus der grauen, quadratischen Einheitsfläche ein fertiges Foto. Das Bild oben stammt übrigens von Gottfried Helnwein von 1987.

Die Malerei ist tot. Es lebe die Malerei. Zu einem Triumph der Malerei gestaltete sich die brillant von Beate Reifenscheid inszenierte Ausstellung von Gottfried Helnwein im Ludwig Museum Koblenz.

The car culture exhibition at Lentos art museum in Linz has managed to attract 23,000 visitors - making it one of the most successful project so far. The exhibition goes on until 4 July by which they expect to have reached the 30,000 visitor mark. 

In comparison the Kokoschka exhibition attracted 40,000 and the Helnwein exhibition 50,000.

Helnwein verbirgt eine mögliche seelische Aufgewühltheit oder Traumatisierung seiner Bildmodelle, die beispielsweise durch die schwarzen, faschistoid und fetischisiert zugleich wirkenden Uniformteile nahe gelegt werden könnte, hinter dem gesetzten Ausdruck seiner Kindergesichter. Wie Laokoon schreien diese wie aus Wachs gemeisselten, "schönen“ Kinder nicht mehr. Sie ertragen etwas, das nicht benannt wird und doch sichtbar wird. Sie kommunizieren in ihrer Intimität eine unauslotbare Abgründigkeit. Die Irritation des Betrachters entsteht daraus, diesem Geheimnis nicht auf die Spur kommen zu können. Die Wunde soll wach gehalten werden, und keiner soll sie heilen dürfen.

Im NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf ist nun eine Auswahl von rund 400 Bildern aus der „geretteten“ Polaroid-Collection zu sehen. Unter den ausgestellten Fotografen sind zahlreiche Berühmtheiten vertreten: Walker Evans, Robert Mapplethorpe und Stephen Shore, Helmut Newton, Oliviero Toscani und Daido Moriyama sind genauso dabei wie die Pop-Art-Ikonen Andy Warhol und Robert Rauschenberg oder Gottfried Helnwein.

Eigentlich ein schrecklicher Anblick, wenn sich nach der Pause der Vorhang hebt und das Publikum spontan klatscht, weil das Schlussbild der Oper "The Child Dreams"so toll ausschaut. Das Bewusstsein, dass der Himmel voll toter, blutiger Kinder hängt, kommt später an als der atemberaubende Eindruck von Gottfried Helnweins Bühnenbild.

Zu einem Ereignis wurde die Aufführung vor allem durch das Bühnenbild und die Kostüme von Gottfried Helnwein. Dessen Kinderportraits in unheilschwangerer Erstarrung haben schon lange Markenzeichen-Qualität und werden von dem 1948 geborenen österreichischen Künstler in allen Medien konfektioniert.

How many art handlers does it take to hang a giant Damien Hirst painting just right? You’d be surprised. From perching a 70,000 pound Do Ho Suh ”house” into the side of the roof of a university building to de-installing Carsten Höller’s mirrored carousels to lugging a precious Gottfried Helnwein through the halls of the Russian State Museum — the professional installation of art requires a keen eye, physical precision, a practical sense of aesthetics, and the ability not to drop anything under pressure.

Ich kann mich erinnern, als dann die Beatles kamen, war das eine Erschütterung, eine Ungeheuerlichkeit, die bei der Generaton meiner Eltern Panik auslöste. Immer wieder hörten wir die Rufe: ‚Die gehören vergast, unterm Hitler hätte es das nicht gegeben!’ Wir ließen uns die Haare wachsen und wurden auf der Straße auch immer so begrüßt: ‚Ihr Gesindel, Ihr gehört's vergast!’ Ich war eigentlich kein Beatles-Anhänger. Ich fand sie interessant, aber erst der Auftritt der Stones war für mich das Schlüsselerlebnis. Es gab ja damals zwei Lager, die Beatles und die Stones Anhänger, die sich eine Zeitlang feindlich gegenüberstanden. Ich war immer auf der Seite der Stones. Die Beatles hatten ja am Anfang dieses gestylte, uniforme Band-Image mit ihren Pilzköpfen, schmalen Krawatten und den schicken Anzügen. Die Stones waren ganz anders, wild, verwahrlost, ungezügelt, verwegen. Es war die Ahnung einer Zeit des Ungehorsams, des Widerstands, der Rebellion. Sie haben uns den Geschmack von Freiheit vermittelt. Ihre Lieder waren härter, aggressiver, anarchistischer. Sie nahmen sich einfach alle Freiheiten und alle Mädchen und verhöhnten die Welt unserer Eltern. Und sie sahen vor allem genau so aus, wie wir gerne ausgesehen hätten. Für uns biedere, eingeschüchterte Nachkriegskinder, die wir wie Ministranten da standen, mit roten Ohren und Hitlerjugend-Haarschnitt - vorne ein Schopf und hinten bis zum Wirbel hinauf geschoren - für uns waren sie wie Götter, die aus einer höheren Welt zu uns heruntergestiegen waren.

Helnwein: Schmerz und Gewalt gegen Wehrlose sind die zentralen Themen meiner Arbeit. In den Siebzigern haben meine Bilder und Aktionen Entsetzen hervorgerufen, weil man dachte, ich sei pervers. Der Missbrauch von Kindern wurde damals von der Gesellschaft und den Medien vollkommen verschwiegen. Mittlerweile ist einiges von diesem systematischen Terror gegen Kinder ans Licht gekommen. Sie wurden in der Psychiatrie gefesselt und in dunkle Räume gesperrt und Bettnässer mit Elektroschocks behandelt. Die österreichische Psychiaterin Maria Nowak-Vogl hat Kinder absichtlich mit Malaria infiziert und in ihrem "Kreuzzug gegen Onanie" Röntgenstrahlen, Psychopharmaka und Tiermedikamente bei kleinen Mädchen eingesetzt.

Gottfried Helnwein and the Dreaming Child is both a visual feast and landmark union of artistic titans Levin and Helnwein, both concerned with the theme of childhood innocence betrayed.

The Helnweins are cutting a wide swath through Los Angele's various scenes - the kind of creative energy that seems to come naturally. As children of the Austrian-Irish artist Gottfried Helnwein, siblings Mercedes and Ali experienced an unconventional and charmed upbringing. They lived in castles in Germany and Ireland, attended a private arts school in England and accompanied their father on trips to America, where they sold their drawings to hotel guests to buy stuffed animals at the gift shop. These days, Mercedes, 31, and Ali, 29, are drawing on that background in their own artistic endeavors: Mercedes as a novelist and visual artist and Ali as a composer and musician, with an emphasis on classical music. They bring a fresh, somewhat ironic playfulness to their chosen mediums that has attracted a raucous group of young fans not typically associated with traditional galleries or classical music concerts. In this way, they stand at a colorful intersection of L.A.'s literary, pop culture, visual art and music scene. And they are rarely at rest, working on several projects at once and often collaborating with each other on videos or performances.

Elias Merhige (i video) e Gottfried Helnwein (il geniale concept per The Golden Age of Grotesque). Quasi inevitabile per un esordiente come LaBeouf uscire dal confronto con le ossa spezzate.

The first is Gottfried Helnwein’s Epiphany II.  The painting is 210 cm x 310 cm long. Gottfried Helnwein is an Austrian-Irish painter, installation and performance artist.

However, the weight of Barks's effect on the world runs much deeper and often along more indirect paths than such explicit influence. For example, conceptual artist extraordinaire Gottfried Helnwein once described a moment of revelation in Europe after World War II: " Opening my first Carl Barks Donald Duck comic book felt like seeing the daylight again for someone who had been trapped underground by a mine-disaster."

Through December 11, the museum is presenting “Pop’d From The Panel,” a exploration of how comics and cartoon art have influenced the modern pop-art movement. The nearly 20 artists with works in the exhibit include provocative Mexican-born Enrique Chagoya, modern “street artist” Ron English, and such iconic contemporary figures as Roy Lichtenstein, Gottfried Helnwein, Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, and Christo. There are 26 two- and three-dimensional works in the exhibition, which is in the Downstairs Changing Gallery.

Fertige Bilder auf Knopfdruck - was in Zeiten von Digitalkameras und Fotodrucker das Selbstverständlichste auf der Welt ist, erschien in den 1970er Jahren geradezu revolutionär. Auch viele Künstler, von Andy Warhol über Ansel Adams und Gottfried Helnwein, verfielen dem geradezu magischen Aspekt der Polaroid-Kameras und schufen - mit unterschiedlichsten Konzepten, aber mit demselben Originalmaterial - beeindruckende Werke.

In Europe, Hyperrealist painters included Austrian Gottfried Helnwein (b. 1948). He first used a hyperrealist technique to portray extremes of suffering. His later works tackle the theme of Nazism and the Holocaust, most famously in his "Epiphany" series (1996-98). In "Epiphany I" (Adoration of the Magi) SS officers with a mother and a child represent the Magi and the Virgin Mary and Jesus, with the child being admired as an example of Aryan perfection.

Collectors Contemporary stages up to nine exhibitions and fair participations a year featuring the likes of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Daniel Buren, Gottfried Helnwein and artists like Chris Levine and Russell Young whom it represents exclusively in the region.

The National Theatre of Scotland and the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, present two shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. The Wheel (image by Gottfried Helnwein) is an unnerving new play by Zinnie Harris (Further than the Furthest Thing), directed by National Theatre of Scotland Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone.

Výstava Já, bezesporu, která se bude v pražské Galerii Rudolfinum konat do 14. srpna, představuje několik ikon současného umění. Stejnojmennou přehlídku připravilo před třemi lety německé Kunstmuseum Wofsburg. K tématu lidské identity mají co říci Američanka Cindy Sherman, Němec Gerhard Richter, Francouz Christian Boltanski i Rakušan Gottfried Helnwein.

In cooperation with Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, this exhibition is exploring themes of human identity - the topic of "self" in the most varied of situations and visual expressions. This international project brings together works from Christian Boltanski, Gottfried Helnwein, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, Bruce Nauman and others.

Individually, the paintings of Gottfried Helnwein can strike a viewer as contrived, manipulative and heartless. But put several dozen of them together, as the Crocker Art Museum has done, and they rock, shaking out the quotient of grave common concern in his private obsessions. Helnwein deliberately evokes the disillusioned view of childhood promoted by another Viennese eminence, Sigmund Freud. But he also fingers the global entertainment industry as an infernal influence, using meticulous realism to place oddly irreal figures borrowed from Disney and anime on a common footing with his human subjects. Despite the lyrical passages in his work, Helnwein appears bent on inducing a distaste for images among consumers of them who have lost perspective on their tyrannizing power. His frequent use of nearly cinematic scale makes this shock therapy both unforgettable and hard to endure.

Eine spezielle Rarität sind die 20-mal-24-Zoll-Großformate. Aufträge dafür hatten Konzernchef Land und sein künstlerischer Berater Ansel Adams nur an handverlesene Fotografen vergeben. Sie waren bei der Arbeit mit einem Material, das im freien Handel nicht erhältlich ist und für dessen Verarbeitung weltweit nur ganz wenige Kameras existieren, europaweit vom tschechischen Fotografen Jan Hnizdo betreut und unterstützt worden.

Since he began his career in Vienna in the late 1960s, Gottfried Helnwein has been known for his radical use of the portrait and self-portrait. His photography, paintings, and monumental installations address themes of inhumanity, violence, and the importance of personal expression with stark and probing psychological intensity. Helnwein's focus on the innocent and wonder of childhood is exemplified in paintings whose forceful imagery is rooted in the artist's upbringing in post-World War II Vienna.

Gottfried Helnwein looks more like a rock star than an internationally acclaimed artist. Dressed all in black, with a bandanna around his head and dark glasses hiding his eyes, he resembles, in a superficial way, Bono. Like Bono, he is concerned about the most troubling issues of our times: violence, inhumanity and oppression. There is a cinematic quality to all of Helnwein's works, which seem to be projected on a wide screen. These "stilled cinematic moments," as Crocker curator Diana Daniels calls them, are powerfully affecting. "He deals with difficult subjects in a way that isn't propagandistic," Daniels said. "It's an open-ended way of dealing with historic subjects that are in danger of slipping away from us." Many of the images are very disturbing, and the museum has issued a warning that some images may be challenging for sensitive or younger viewers. But the show is a powerful one, posing questions we all need to contemplate.

The exhibition GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN - INFERNO OF THE INNOCENTS at the Crocker Art Museum opens on Friday, January 28th from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Like a modern-day Goya, Gottfried Helnwein’s art addresses themes of inhumanity, violence and the virtue of personal expression. Over more than four decades, the artist has pursued a singular, radical vision realized in monumental paintings and photographs.
