mundos invertidos features many of the artist’s most iconic creations, shown together with a selection of works from SOLO. The exhibition has been made possible with the collaboration of over a dozen different collections and includes significant pieces loaned by the artist himself, as well as recently produced sculptures and oil paintings. In Helnwein’s upturned worlds, fiction and reality combine to portray the most disquieting aspects of human nature.

The gift includes works by modern artists Oleksandr Bohomazov, Natalia Goncharova, and Mikhail Larionov; Dadaist and fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld; socio-political artist Gottfried Helnwein; realist John Register; formal abstraction artist James Hayward; sculptor Kristine Mays; and Pop artist Mel Ramos, among many others.

Gregory Crewdson, Xenia Hausner, Gottfried Helnwein, Alex Katz, Tracey Moffatt, Shirin Neshat, Michelangelo Pistoletto und Arnulf Rainer halten den Blick der abgebildeten Personen in einem bestimmten Augenblick fest: Wohin schauen die Personen? Portraits of children from a local Jewish school were unveiled to kickoff the extensive restoration of the Stadttempel, Vienna's oldest synagogue, in the runup to its 200th anniversary. 'They are the guarantee that Judaism will always be part of Austria,' said artist Gottfried Helnwein.

Radical Beauty radically questions our perception of beauty, attractiveness and aesthetics. In this globally unique photo project, over 60 internationally renowned fashion and art photographers worked together with people with Down syndrome to develop individual images and photo series. Surprising and unique portraits were created in professional studio conditions. The protagonists include experienced performers such as actresses Sarah Gordy (UK) and Lily Moore (USA), but the majority of them lead a life outside the limelight.

Xian Zheng zeigt im Kubin-Haus eine umfangreiche Serie von Ateliers bildender Künstler:innen aus Österreich, die in den letzten vier Jahren entstanden ist. Part I, opening soon, will highlight artists from the very first year, such as abstractionists, Erik Saxon, James Hayward, and David Simpson alongside international gallery stalwarts including Austrian painter and conceptual artist Gottfried Helnwein and French Nouveau Réaliste Jacques Villeglé [1926-2022], among many others.

Helnwein imitates the alleged incorruptibility of a camera using the means of painting. In fact, the artist uses photographs as a template and thus comes even closer to reality. But it is precisely painting that relegates all depictions to the realm of fiction. The precision and cleanliness of his working method transform dirty reality into meditative, quiet images that, when viewed, inevitably maneuver us into a dilemma between beauty and horror, admiration and disgust, attraction and protest. Helnwein's works are timeless statements against appropriation, aggression, destruction and violence.

The Philharmonie de Paris has decided to turn its attention to extreme music, devoting a brand-new exhibition to it from April 4 to September 29, 2024. For the first time in France, an installation will present a documented picture of this movement, where music, popular culture, anthropological vision and contemporary art are in dialogue.

To celebrate the 75th birthday of Gottfried Helnwein, the ALBERTINA Museum is showing a large-scale exhibition of his output from the past three decades. The Vienna-born artist Gottfried Helnwein’s oeuvre is characterized by his interest in the themes of pain, injury, and violence. A central motif of his is the figure of the vulnerable and defenseless child as a proxy of sorts, one that embodies all psychological and societal anxieties.

In collaboration with the Vienna Insurance Group, Gottfried Helnwein transformed the Vienna Ringtower into an oversized call against violence. On a total of 3,000 m², Helnwein makes the experience of violence among women and children visible.

Representational Art has been an integral part of the visual arts for centuries, experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. The works depict the world around us, often with a realistic approach or accurate representation, from the human condition to social and cultural issues, to the perception of our surroundings. Representational painting has been used to depict a wide range of emotions, stories, and themes, becoming a powerful form of expression that conveys messages of social and political importance, as well as capturing the beauty of the everyday. Popular culture has also often been inspired by representational paintings, especially cinema, through films that explore themes and issues such as romance, beauty, fear, and the human condition.

Contemplating Character explores the evolution of portraiture in 81 works on paper by 68 artists. Executed by some of the most famous portraitists in Europe and America, the works range in date from the 18th century to present day and encompasses the many art styles and movements during this expanse of time.

Ab Dienstag wird am Südturm des Doms ein großflächiges Plakat angebracht, auf dem der immer wieder mit Schockeffekten arbeitende gebürtige Wiener ein verletztes Mädchen mit Blutflecken darstellt. Darunter die um Empathie werbende Aufschrift "My Sister" und das Jesuswort aus dem Matthäusevangelium "Was ihr für meine geringsten Schwestern und Brüder getan habt, habt ihr mir getan" (Mt 25,40).

Die Ausstellung The Face in der ALBERTINA MODERN zeigt ausgewählte Werke zeitgenössischer Porträtfotografie aus der Sammlung der ALBERTINA. Die Fotografien von internationalen und nationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zeigen, wie facettenreich das Thema Porträt sein kann: Der Bogen reicht von eindringlichen Bildnisstudien berühmter Persönlichkeiten über Porträtaufnahmen von KünstlerInnen in ihren Ateliers bis hin zu Arbeiten, die sich mittels serieller Aufnahmen eingehend mit den Porträtierten und ihrem Lebensumfeld auseinandersetzen. Über die gezeigten Fotografien werden Themen wie kulturelle Identität, persönliche Beziehungen, diverse Lebenswelten aber auch Fragen der Herkunft und des eigenen Ichs verhandelt. Zu sehen sind u.a. Werke von Richard Avedon, Gottfried Helnwein, Chuck Close und Franz Hubmann.

The exhibition is dedicated for the first time to this level of reflection in Helnwein’s work and first summarizes those dark paintings in which the image is developed out of blackness and deep blue (as a romantic keynote) and leads over to the atrocities of the Nazi regime, in that in particular the experiments on imprisoned persons and those segregated into psychiatric wards underpin the racial ideology. The central motif of almost all of Helnwein’s pictures is the innocent child, above all defenselessly at the mercy of adults. The childlike nature, from the innocence of the early years to young girls who themselves take up arms in his more recent works, shows differentiated facets of the soul that are stirring, emotionally gripping, and technically brilliantly realized.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis the world premiere of PASSION could not take place at the PalmKlang Festival. In these challenging times we were inspired by a main message of PASSION: The hope for resurrection. Therefore we joined forces with other art forms and developed a new concept for the premiere; we exchanged the stage for a museum and the audience for a camera. On the 3rd and 4th of July 2020 we spent the night at the Albertina Museum in Vienna. Surrounded by and inspired by the art of Gottfried Helnwein, we brought PASSION to life. The result is this film, a resurrection of our artistic beliefs and hopes.

Die Ausstellung zeigt mit 170 KünstlerInnen Positionen von 1900 bis heute, die kritisch, realistisch differenziert, aber auch mit viel Ironie und Humor kindliches Glück ebenso wie Frustration dokumentieren. Koblenz, 14.12.2020, 17:45 Uhr Von Schwarzer Romantik bis Futurismus: Ludwig Museum stellt Programm 2021 vor „Mit Ludwig geht nicht nur der größte, sondern auch der menschlichste Mäzen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wenn Sammeln Kunst ist, dann war Ludwig das größte Genie dieses Metiers, gewissermaßen Picasso und Walt Disney in einem.“ Diese Zeilen schrieb Gottfried Helnwein am 1. August 1996 in einem sehr persönlichen Nachruf zum Tod von Peter Ludwig. Der Künstler gehörte zu den Ersten, deren Werke Ludwig und seine Ehefrau Irene sammelten. Deshalb ist es nur folgerichtig, wenn das Ludwig Museum Koblenz vom 14. März bis zum 6. Juni mit einer Helnwein-Schau in das Ausstellungsjahr 2021 startet.

Not only have science and medicine always been involved in the exploration of the oral cavity, but also art and cultural history, from antiquity to the present. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg traces this broadly diversified path of the history of the motif within the frameworks the exhibition On Everyone’s Lips. From Pieter Bruegel to Cindy Sherman. With over 250 works of art by, among others, Albrecht Dürer, Pablo Picasso, Max Klinger, Marina Abramović, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois and Gottfried Helnwein. it is the most comprehensive exhibition on the theme of the oral cavity in art in Germany to date.

Some art alludes to the darker sides of Austrian history, including Gottfried Helnwein’s photorealistic images of wounded or poisoned children. “These artists have something in common: They all turned against the ideals of the Third Reich,” said Mr. Schröder. “I’m doing a kind of exorcism,” he added. “Exactly here, where ‘degenerate art’ was shown, I’m showing artists who after 1945 declared war on the degeneracy of war.”

an exhibition exploring one of the most influential and groundbreaking American writers of the second half of the 20th century. He was a leading figure in the Beat movement and his dreamlike, post-modern writing reflects his personal experiences as a heroin addict and travels across the globe. He’s best known for Naked Lunch (1959). The exhibition consists of portraits of the writer and in many cases meeting with other significant writers and artists such as Allen Ginsberg, Francis Bacon, Dennis Hopper, John Waters and Gottfried Helnwein.

Die Frage nach unserer Identität ist in ihrer Bedeutung kaum zu überschätzen. Das Thema ist ein Leben lang aktuell und bleibt immer spannend. Der Drang zur Selbstdarstellung ist ein zentraler Trieb unserer Kultur und die Möglichkeiten dafür waren noch nie so ausgeprägt wie heute. Voraussetzung der zeitgenössischen Sicht auf die eigene Person sind bahnbrechende Erkenntnisse der Moderne und Egon Schiele hat diesen Schritt am konsequentesten vollzogen. Sein Statement „Ich bin alles zugleich“ bildet eine völlig neue Basis für die Selbstdarstellung, der Blick hinter die Fassade des Menschen wird zur zentralen Botschaft und bestimmt die moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst nachhaltig.

Disney-Chef Bob Iger steuerte ein Micky-Maus-Bild des britischen Künstlers Damien Hirst als Leihgabe bei. In der Ausstellung sind auch Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud und der Österreicher Gottfried Helnwein mit einem riesengroßen Porträt eines grimmig grinsenden Micky vertreten.

Though the Albertina was founded in 1776, it makes an effort to showcase contemporary art, both by Austrians and foreign artists. This winter’s exhibit features more than 70 pieces of art created in the second half of the 20th century by a variety of artists including Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Gottfried Helnwein, Andy Warhol, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig.

In addition to original animation pieces, artifacts, and film clips illustrating Mickey’s rich history, visitors can see pop art interpretations of Disney’s beloved mouse. The works in the exhibition represent a range of artistic expression, from American photographers Diane Arbus and Robert Mapplethorpe, modernist masters Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, pioneers of the Russian avant-garde Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Bogomazov, and El Lissitzky and pop artists Andy Warhol, Mel Ramos and Edward Ruscha. The show also includes a diverse array of contemporary works by artists such as Gottfried Helnwein, Damian Elwes and Jean-Charles Blais.

Ausgangspunkt ist die Dankesgeste an die Ludwigs, die entsprechend an mehreren Stellen auftauchen, sei es im expressiven Porträt des Sammlers von Bernhard Heisig, sei es in den monumentalen Tafeln von Gottfried Helnwein, der die Köpfe des Paares jeweils auf fast zwei Meter hohe Leinwände malte, einmal fotorealistisch, einmal in einer fast schwarzen Variante, bei der man erst nach längerer Zeit erkennt, dass auch in dieser Nachtversion Peter und Irene Ludwig verborgen sind.

Das Zitat von Gottfried Helnwein - „Es gab keine andere Möglichkeit als den Aufstand, die Anarchie, das Zurückschlagen“ - prangt in großen Lettern über Günter Brus „Wiener Spaziergang“ (1965). Gleich daneben führt 1968 Valie Export Peter Weibel an der Hundeleine durch die Kärntnerstraße. Der Mann als Hund am Gängelband der Frau als Zeichen des Widerstandes gegen die Unterdrückung.

Gottfried Helnwein, der in den 1970er-Jahren mit schockierenden Plakatsujets auftritt, nimmt eine spezifische Rolle in der österreichischen Kunst ein, allerdings hat auch er schon früh Affinitäten zum Aktionismus. Er thematisiert das Individuum als das von äußeren gesellschaftlichen Zwängen malträtierte und damit leidende Wesen. „Mit dem Thema der Leidensdarstellung hat sich Gottfried Helnwein seit jeher beschäftigt. In den 1970er- und 80er-Jahren setzte er häufig auf den spektakulären Schock der Übertreibung, auf Provokation, auf groteske Formen und grimassierende Mimik von gequälten Individuen.

Curator Yazid Anani has brought together a vast pool of artists including Gottfried Helnwein, Khaled Jarrar, Lara Baladi, Larissa Sansour, Sliman Mansour, Tarek Al-Ghoussein, Yazan Khalili, and collectives The Convivialist Manifesto, and The Silent University, among others, on the occasion of the new A.M. Qattan Foundation building.

The focus of Albertina Contemporary lies on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of postmodern art. In this year’s presentation of contemporary output at the Albertina, works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Gottfried Helnwein, Alex Katz, Kenton Nelson, Imi Knoebel, Maria Lassnig, and others take centre-stage.

The exhibition focuses on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of art after 1945. Around 80 masterpieces serve to illustrate the multifaceted nature of postmodernism, ranging from Hyperrealism to abstraction and from color aesthetics to political themes, while also providing a clear impression of the complex parallel trends of the past few decades. Works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig and others take centre-stage. A generous donation by Gottfried Helnwein has made possible to show seven high-quality paintings by the famous Austrian artist at the exhibition.

For the first time, the Albertina is staging an exhibition on two levels of the museum: over 2,500 square meters’ floor space host a broad survey of the Albertina’s collecting strategy for contemporary art. From the over 10,000 works acquired over the past 18 years, around 350 works by 55 artists have been selected for this presentation.

In 1971/72 Gerhard Richter created a series of 48 iconic portraits of men that influenced Modernity, in a photorealistic manner based on black and white photographs in encyclopedias. Exactly 20 years later, in 1991/92 Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein replied with a cycle of 48 portraits that depict exclusively women of historic influence.  In contrast to Gerhard Richter’s men in gray, Helnwein painted his women in fiery red. Both Helnwein's and Gerhard Richter's works, which are part of the collection of the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, are being shown together face to face for the first time as the centerpiece of the 'exhibition Undeniable Me', at Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague.
