Durch die Ausstellung im Essener Museum Folkwang mit über fünfzig Pastellen, Aquarellen, und Zeichnungen, die zusammen eine konzentrierte Werksübersicht seit 1969 ergeben, führt jener, blutrote, nicht zuletzt austriatypische Faden. Seine Kinder waren immer verletzt, mißraten, dannoch voll trotziger Phantasie. Anfang der siebziger Jahre fertigte der 1948 in Wien geborene Gottfried Helnwein die lieben Kleinen in einer porentief detailbesessenen Mischtechnik aus Farbstift, und Aquarell: Rosa Puffärmel, aus denen bandagierte Hände zum Vorschein kommen, Pupillen, die ebenso puttenhaft kullern wie gespenstisch verdreht sind. Oft war die Lippenpartie eingeschnitten, narbig vernäht und lege einen Teil des Gebisses frei. Immer traf man hier auf einen jungen Verwandten jenes von dem Politbarden Franz-Josef Degenhardt erdachten Hasenscharten-Kindes, "das biß, wenn's bitte sagen sollt". Auch die Federzeichnungen, die in der Nachfolge des dunklen Phantasten Alfred Kubin zwischen 1974 und 1979 entstanden, waren deutlich geprägt durch das Thema "Kind", ebenso wie die ganz frühen Wiener Straßenaktionen, an denen Kinder mit Kopfbandagen beteiligt waren ("Aktion Sorgenkind", 1972).

Biennale-catalogue This edition, at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti, coincided with the 150 anniversary of the birth of photography. The curator, Daniela Palazzoli, underlined the importance of the artistic value of photograpy putting aside the historical and modern section a contemporary section that hosts authors like David Hockney, Gottfried Helnwein,Clegg & Guttmann, renowned names in the artistic world.

This book accompanies an exhibition tour of the Staedtische Galerie Erlangen Kommunale Galerie Berlin Badischer Kunstverein e.V. Karlsruhe Kunstverein Ingolstadt Staedtische Museum Schleswig which was first presented in October 1989. All instant pictures originate from the International Polaroid Collection. - Helnwein staged, without inhibition, the spectacle of his own mind, counterpoised between his emotions as an accelerating element of experience and his rationality in reflection upon the human condition.

It was to our good fortune that Gottfried Helnwein also strove to break away from the museum and gallery sector in order to communicate with a larger public. This appeared on a grand scale on the site between the cathedral and Museum Ludwig, and at a time of "photokina", with its hundreds of thousands of visitors. The 100 metre picture wall did not fail to hit its mark: it induced bewilderment as well as aggressiveness. After a few days numerous pictures had been slashed, one even stolen. Gottfried Helnwein saw the exhibition as a process which would continue and be reflected in later presentations. The pictures were not renewed, but patched up, so that this reminder of the persecution of Jewish people would bear the traces of a lack of insight and understanding in the present day.

An Installation by Gottfried Helnwein in memory of "Kristallnacht" (The Night of Broken Glass) 1938. The Installation was erected in fall 1988 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Pogrom in the night of November 9, 1938. The Installation was placed between Ludwig Museum and the Cologne Cathedral, alongside the railroad track of the central station of Cologne. A hundred meter long wall of pictures with large images of children's faces, in a seemingly endless row, as if made to "line up to be sorted" - "selected". With the faces of christian, jewisch and handicapped children, that lived in Germany in 1988. The first panel was white and had only one word written on: "Selektion".

Die Bilderstrasse zwischen dem Kölner Dom und dem Museum Ludwig ist hundert Meter lang. Jedes der Bilder ist vier Meter hoch. Es sind täglich Tausende, die den hinteren Teil der Domplatte passieren, und die weitaus meisten von ihnen, die nur die Bildersprache der Werbung an dieser Stelle kennen, sind verdutzt, empört, schockiert über die bleichen Kindergesichter,die im Scanachrome-Verfahren auf Kunststoffolie gebracht worden sind. Kaum war die Bilderstrasse installiert, kam es schon zu ersten Beschädigungen: Nachts wurde mit Messern in die, durch das Schminken verfremdeten, alt wirkenden grossformatigen Kinderportraits hineingestochen, ein Bild wurde gestohlen. Kölner Museen und die Stadtverwaltung erhalten täglich Dutzende Anrufe und befinden sich im Erklärungs- und Legitimationszwang.

The exhibition Passage(s) was presented by the Centre international d'art contemporain de Montréal (CIAC), a non profit organization founded in 1983 in order to present various activities in the visual arts: exhibitions, conferences and special events. The Portrait The photographic representation of people, whether as models or as subjects, is a theme of a group of works whose treatment foils in a way the conventional act of recognition. Such is the strategy of German artist Gotfried Helnwein.
