Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning... With its huge size, hyperrealist style, and disturbing content, this unsettling work bestows a psychological anxiety accompanied by a strong magnetic pull. Confronting it, we tend to stare-entranced by both its beauty and its seductive, malevolent overtones...

La manière la plus dialectique pour recycler, détourner, admirer et critiquer tout à la fois, demeure le médium photographique. Gottfried Helnwein propose des images inconvenantes, qui renvoient la pérennité des objets dérivés de Disney à des statuts diversement fétichistes: images saintes que l'on prie ou statuettes lubriques qui promettent des extases ambiguës.

Open for viewing from Saturday 3rd December The December exhibition at Temple Bar Gallery is aptly named. A Moment in Time will present a snapshot of contemporary painting and its infinite possibilities and variations. The private view for A Moment in Time on December 6th promises to be a glittering occasion as new work by over eighty Irish and International artists will be shown for the first time and the invited audience will have the opportunity to mingle with both artists and serious art collectors.

For the past twenty-four years the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy Foundation, in association with the UCLA Film and Television Archive, has presented a series of film programs featuring the outstanding documentaries of the previous year. The film, NINTH NOVEMBER NIGHT, was considered by the Academy’s Documentary Screening Committee to be one of the outstanding documentaries of 2004. It is our wish to include a screening of "Ninth November Night" in this prestigious series on the evening of Wednesday, November 30, 2005.

(LITTLE ROCK, AR) – The Arkansas Arts Center presents the fourth event of the à la cARTe fundraising party series in honor of the contentious artist Gottfried Helnwein on November 17, 2005. Coordinated by the Arkansas Arts Center Young Patrons, the à la cARTe series is comprised of five parties, each celebrating one of five eccentric and important artists – Andy Warhol, Dale Chihuly, Vincent Van Gogh, Gottfried Helnwein and Diego Rivera.

Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. Von dieser Krankheit erlöst zu werden durch den Tod ist eine Unmöglichkeit, denn die Krankheit und deren Qual und der Tod ist gerade, nicht sterben zu können.” So ist die Geschichte der Moderne nicht zuletzt auch eine Erfolgsgeschichte der Melancholie und des Eindringens ihres schwarzen Spuks in die letzten Paradiese des Seins- und Weltvertrauens.

Das Wiener BA-CA-Kunstforum gibt im Ferdinandeum ein Gastspiel: Zu sehen ist ein Querschnitt durch die figurative österreichische Malerei von heute.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey presents the exhibition Austrian Contemporary Art and Post-war Painting: The Essl Collection, a seminal encounter with the most commanding pictorial propositions engendered in the second half of the 2Oth century. Das Ausstellungprojekt präsentiert auf besonders vielfältige Art die grenzüberschreitenden Aktivitäten, die im Bereich von Kunst, Musik, Literatur und Film seit den 60er Jahren stattfinden. Das Erleben der Sound Art wird über die zentrale Ausstellung "Vinyl – Records and Covers by Artists" hinaus mit 5 Ausstellungsmodulen intensiviert: Konzerte, ein Radioprogramm, eine internationale Tagung, ein Kunstmarkt zur Sound Art sowie eine Filmwoche machen die Klangwelt der bildenden Künstler hörbar und erfahrbar. The museum contains a representative collection of mainly European art. There are individual works by many of the most important artists, including Rembrandt, Gainsborough, David, and many of the impressionists and post-impressionists - Degas, Renoir, Monet, Pissaro, Seurat, Cézanne and others. There are also representative works by key twentieth century figures such as Braque and Picasso, and works of contemporary artists like Gottfried Helnwein and Robert Crumb.

Zielsetzung: Der im Unterricht der Qualifikationsphase vertieft zu behandelnde thematische Schwerpunkt 1 "Bilder vom Menschen" gibt u.a. die Auseinandersetzung mit "Bildern der Entfremdung" und die Inszenierung der menschlichen Figur vor. Bezüge zu dem thematischen Schwerpunkt 2 sind insbesondere durch die für Helnwein charakteristische Einbindung der menschlichen Figur in Raumzusammenhänge gegeben. Eine Annäherung an das Werk Helnweins soll in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit dem sich in den Arbeiten manifestierenden Menschenbild erfolgen.

In den 70er Jahren reagieren in Österreich so unterschiedliche Künstler wie Wolfgang Herzig, Gottfried Helnwein und Franz Zadrazil auf die in den 60er Jahren die Kunstszene dominierenden Abstrakten. Gleichzeitig ist die erzählerische Struktur der Malerei in dieser Zeit oft viel klarer, von einer allzu grossen Bedeutungsaufladung gereinigt und damit auch von den "Wiener Phantasten" weit entfernt. Franz Zadrazil zeigt z.B. in seinen akribisch fotorealistischen Stadtbildern die Bildrealität der Fotografie mit den Mitteln der Malerei und reflektiert damit internationale Fragestellungen des Realismus. Die aufwändigen Figurenkompositionen von Wolfgang Herzig verweisen oft mit Härte, Ironie und Sarkasmus auf gesellschaftliche Realität. Noch weiter geht etwas später Gottfried Helnwein mit seinen hyperrealistischen Porträts, die fotografische Genauigkeit mit Referenzen an den Wiener Aktionismus (bandagierte, wundgezeichnete Köpfe) verbinden.

Group show, catalogue This is a selection of dynamic works from the collection of Mikki and Stanley Weithorn, demonstrating their commitment to social and political issues and artists of color. Although their collecting focuses on the contemporary, both well-known and emerging artists, selected historic pieces show the breadth of their interest and the roots of socially conscious work in the early 20th century.
