Essentially a hyperrealist artist of quite extraordinary facility, Gottfried Helnwein's huge Photorealist canvases are awash with references to religious Renaissance paintings, the dark allure of Nazi imagery and his background in the ruins of post war Vienna. His strategy is often of deliberate shock and provocation, from his earliest extreme watercolors of doll-like, wounded children with their hare-lips and facial disfigurements, which prompted cartoonist Robert Crumb to call him "a very fine artist and one sick mother---er."

The events feature leading artists of the 20th century including Sir John Lavery, Sir William Orpen, Jack Butler Yeats, Walter Osborne, Paul Henry, Roderic O’Conor, along with Louis le Brocquy, who died in 2012. Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. Von dieser Krankheit erlöst zu werden durch den Tod ist eine Unmöglichkeit, denn die Krankheit und deren Qual und der Tod ist gerade, nicht sterben zu können.” So ist die Geschichte der Moderne nicht zuletzt auch eine Erfolgsgeschichte der Melancholie und des Eindringens ihres schwarzen Spuks in die letzten Paradiese des Seins- und Weltvertrauens.

Two days after the Sandy Hook school massacre, a survival gear company called Black Dragon Tactical composed a new slogan to promote sales of armored backpack inserts. “Arm the teachers,” the company declared on Facebook. “In the meantime, bulletproof the kids.”... The question may be political, but the keenest response is to be found in a museum in Mexico City, the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, at a retrospective of paintings and photographs by the Austrian-American artist Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein’s extraordinary work depicts the fragile innocence of children. Devoid of grown-up sentimentalism, his images can be overwhelming, especially those that show how that innocence falters in an adult world.

The exhibition focuses on macabre topics and their relations to the world of beauty and glamour in the art and visual culture, starting from the 1990s. The main connecting thread is the body: how it can be manipulated and (ab)used in visual-cultural practices. We will be showing a large amount of photography from the 1990s til today, as well as the videos, objects and costumes that meet the subject.

Both children and toys wear exaggerated expressions, but expressions that do not seem unnatural to them; if anything, they seem tempered, the toys' by the crepuscular light Helnwein throws around them and the kids' by the odd lack of hyperbole which such pre-teens - especially girls - are normally wont to display. These girls seem truly apprehensive, doubtful, suspicious, frightened, disbelieving, even slightly shell-shocked. Yet Helnwein does not exploit their seeming fragility so much as commute it to us; the way he paints these quietly fearful children provokes not our sympathy but our empathy. We take a more doting view of the several girls' faces with their eyes closed (two of them in the dark), but amidst their wide-eyed sisters, the sleep of these innocents also seems fleeting.

The images you are about to see may shock or confound you. Gottfried Helnwein frequently depicts children in his gigantic, mesmerizing portraits, along with "low culture" icons including Donald Duck, with the loss of childhood innocence as a reoccurring theme.

Throughout the Republic of Ireland, stories about power outages dominated the evening news, but the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein and his wife, Renate, their four children and three of their grandchildren were oblivious to the storm. Gottfried, in a skull-print bandanna and black sunglasses, spoke about the spirit of a jealous woman who tormented the burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese on her wedding day (she married Gottfried’s friend Marilyn Manson there in 2005 in a ceremony officiated by the surrealist filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky). Von Teese was nearly ready to walk down the aisle when the ceiling above her vanity came crashing down, narrowly missing her and her maid of honor.

Strangeness and beauty are hallmarks of Helnwein's art. Helnwein's work is for grown-up audiences that know people are capable of the most horrible and the most uplifting things imaginable. The art world has long fallen for Helnwein's work. In its permanent collection, the de Young Museum has a stunning 8-by-10-foot Helnwein painting called Epiphany II (Adoration of the Shepherds), which depicts a room full of Nazi guards smiling and guffawing over a dark-haired Aryan boy held by a young, bare-breasted woman. Gleich zwei Kunstmessen buhlen derzeit in Wien um Kundschaft. Bei der Wikam gibt es neben alten Stücken Zeitgenössisches von Helnwein oder Brus. Die Art&Antique bietet neben Antiquitäten etwa Kokoschka - und es wurden 60 Tonnen Sand in der Hofburg aufgeschüttet.

Wohnzimmerartige Atmosphäre, fließende Übergänge und der museale Kontext: Die Kunstmesse Art Austria beeindruckt allein schon durch ihr Setting im Leopold Museum, das auch heuer 2.600 Quadratmeter Ausstellungsfläche für die 8. Ausgabe der Messe österreichischer Kunst freigeräumt hat.

Die Albertina widmet Gottfried Helnwein eine umfangreiche Retrospektive, die alle Stationen seines bisherigen Werdegangs abbildet. Helnwein, einer der bekanntesten österreichischen Künstler der Gegenwart, wurde durch seine hyperrealistischen Bilder von Kindern berühmt. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Themen Gewalt und Schmerz in seinen Arbeiten sorgte in der Vergangenheit immer wieder für Diskussionen.

Sonntagvormittag herrschte großer Andrang in der Albertina. Maler, Aktionist und Bühnenbildner Gottfried Helnwein lud zu seiner Buchpräsentation, und auch Schauspielerin Iris Berben reiste aus Deutschland an. Sie hat sogar vor Jahren eines seiner ersten Bilder gekauft – „Das Osterwetter“, das auch in der Retrospektive in der Albertina zu sehen ist. Für sie ist der Ausnahme-Künstler ein „Kompass, ein Leuchtturm und ein Komplize“.

Am 27. September wird in der Ehrenhalle am offenen Dach des Äußeren Burgtors die Ausstellung "TerminARTor" eröffnet. Zu sehen sind schwarze Bilder, die eine geheime Friedensbotschaft enthalten. Jedes Bild stammt von einem anderen Kunst-Stars. Mitgemacht haben zum Beispiel Gottfried Helnwein und Peter Weibel. Erst mit einem speziellen Teleskop sieht man die verborgenen Botschaften.

The official gubernatorial portrait of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is displayed in the Rotunda of the State Capitol following an unveiling ceremony Monday in Sacramento, California. The portrait was painted by Austrian-Irish artist Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein is known for his stark and dramatic work, including a series on children in war, a watercolor of Adolf Hitler and some rather grotesque self-portraits. He also worked with  Marilyn Manson 

On Monday, he unveiled his official gubernatorial portrait, a hyper-realistic painting that is more than 6 feet high. It's at least 1,000 square inches bigger than the portrait of former Gov. Gray Davis — whom Schwarzenegger ousted in the 2003 recall election — making it the largest among those of recent California governors. "We were never afraid to dream big," he said. "It is in our DNA as Californians." Schwarzenegger, an immigrant from Austria, chose Austrian-born artist Gottfried Helnwein to paint the portrait and paid for it himself. In a statement, Helnwein described Schwarzenegger as "larger than life." Creating the portrait "was quite a challenge, and I enjoyed every moment of it," he said.

The portrait, which will eventually hang on the third floor, was done by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, a realist who previously painted Andy Warhol and John F. Kennedy.

Kunst aus Österreich? Da denkt man gleich an Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, oder - später dann - an die Wiener Aktionisten der 1960er und 1970er Jahre, an Franz West oder Gottfried Helnwein. Der menschliche Körper mit seiner Manipulierbarkeit, seiner Sexualität, seinen Qualen und seiner Endlichkeit war immer wieder Thema in den Werken dieser Künstler. Helnweins berstendes Selbstporträt fand sich sogar auf einem Cover der Band Scorpions: Zwei Gabeln bohren sich da tief in die Augenhöhlen des Gepeinigten.

Gottfried Helnwein, dem zuletzt anlässlich seines 65. Geburtstages eine große Retrospektive in der Albertina gewidmet wurde, gilt als einer der umstrittensten österreichischen Künstler der Nachkriegszeit. Stets sorgte seine schonungslose Darstellung von gesellschaftlichen Missständen und Tabuthemen für Kontroversen.

Modernism’s 1982 Andy Warhol exhibition — the first time the Pop artist’s work was shown on the West Coast — has gone down in local cultural history as emblematic of Muller’s tendency to be at least one step ahead of the city’s artistic leanings. In addition to mounting 18 retrospectives of the Russian avant-garde, Modernism was the first California gallery to show the works of architect Le Corbusier, fashion photographer and Dada collagist Erwin Blumenfeld and Viennese conceptual artist Gottfried Helnwein, whose paintings are currently on view.

For his new collection of images, Berkeley photographer Richard Nagler spent a lot of time in museums. He also spent a lot of time waiting. Stationed in front of a work of art, he would wait for someone to come along and complete it. The serendipitous, unposed results come from both Nagler’s creative eye as well as his patience. Looking at Art, The Art of Looking, published by Berkeley’s Heyday Press, and launching tomorrow night at Mrs Dalloway’s bookstore in Berkeley, is the culmination of all those hours spent at major art museums around the world.

Konsequent und virtuos. Technische Meisterschaft und auch die Konsequenz einer packenden sozialkritischen Thematik offenbaren sich in dieser Ausstellung: Gewalt, Schmerz, Verletzung werden dargestellt. Den Körper ebenso wie die Psyche betreffend. Helnwein dokumentiert hier in Linz einen künstlerischen Reifegrad, der eine weitere Steigerung kaum vorstellbar macht. Seine Eingriffe sind von einer schmerzhaften Unmittelbarkeit, deren emotionale Energie weit über die großen Bildformate hinaus den Raum und sein Publikum ergreift. 45 Werke aus der Kunstsammlung von Maximilian Schell kommen im November und Dezember bei "Christie's" in Amsterdam unter den Hammer. Die Versteigerung der Kunstwerke – unter anderem von Arnulf Rainer, Gottfried Helnwein und Josef Albers – soll 800.000 Euro Erlös bringen.

FACE IT - die erste Museums-Ausstellung Gottfried Helnweins seit mehr als 20 Jahren in Österreich ist mit 38.000 BesucherInnen nach knapp drei Monaten (10.3. - 5.6.2006) am Pfingstmontag im Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz zu Ende gegangen. Face It kann somit als die meist besuchte Schau eines zeitgenössischen Künstlers im Lentos verbucht werden.

Erste museale Werkschau des österreichischen Künstlers, der seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre zunächst in Deutschland gelebt hat und heute in Los Angeles und Irland ansässig ist. Die Ausstellung im grossen Saal des Museums zeigt Werke aus allen Schaffensperioden seit den frühen 1970er Jahren. Dabei steht das Thema des menschlichen Gesichts im Mittelpunkt, mit dem Helnwein sich in mehr als drei Jahrzehnten künstlerischer Arbeit auseinander gesetzt hat.In Österreich ist Helnwein nach wie vor als "Provokateur" und "Schockkünstler" im Bewusstsein. Der Name Helnwein stand damals für hyperrealistische Darstellungen verletzter und verunstalteter Menschen, oft Kinder, sowie für Bildzitate aus der Populärkultur. Angesichts der substanziellen Weiterentwicklung seines Werks, verbunden mit neuen Bildfindungen und dem Einsatz neuer Medien (digitale Fotografie, Video) gilt es, dieses Oevre heute umfassend zu betrachten. Dies erscheint nicht zuletzt auch im Kontext eines Booms neuer figurativer Malerei und angesichts des weitgehend durchgesetzten Bezugs auf Medienbilder sowie auf Populärkultur in der jungen Malerei interessant. Mit einem aktualisierten Blick auf Helnweins Bildsujets und seine Produktionsweise ist ein Künstler zu entdecken, der sich in erster Linie moralischen, emanzipatorischen Motiven verpflichtet fühlt und dessen Platz innerhalb der sogenannten "politischen" Kunst in vollem Umfang erst anzuerkennen ist.
