In 1972, violent protests brought Gottfried Helnwein’s first exhibition to premature end. His Depictions of bandaged and wounded children struck a nerve in postwar Vienna, and his later work earned him the title “Master of the Scandalous” from the Guardian. Over 50 years later, Helnwein lives in a castle in Ireland.
