Gottfried Helnwein’s paintings of children are both touching and disturbing. The hyperrealistic character of his images serves to intensify this effect still further. The vulnerable and defenseless child serves as the central motif in his examination of the themes of pain, injury, and violence.

The most complete monograph realized about the Austrian painter, photographer, filmmaker, performer and set designer, born in Vienna in 1948. The works of Helnwein show the bare truth where society instead hides and removes. What emerges by leafing through the pages of this monograph is the obsession that accompanies the artistic career of this notable Austrian artist, marked by the wish to breakdown the rhetoric of war, the constructions of self-absolution, the mystifications of religious institutions in whose pitfalls men periodically fall as if they had not committed the same mistake over and over again.

Erste museale Werkschau von Gottfried Helnwein in Österreich seit 1985. Der österreichische Künstler hat seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre zunächst in Deutschland gelebt hat und ist heute in Los Angeles und Irland ansässig. Die Ausstellung im grossen Saal des Museums zeigt Werke aus allen Schaffensperioden seit den frühen 1970er Jahren. Dabei steht das Thema des menschlichen Gesichts im Mittelpunkt, mit dem Helnwein sich in mehr als drei Jahrzehnten künstlerischer Arbeit auseinander gesetzt hat.

Mit Werken von Ansel Adams, Nobuyoshi Araki, Sybille Bergemann, Brigid Berlin, Anne und Bernhard Blume, Chuck Close, Walker Evans, Federico Fellini, Arno Fischer, Gisèle Freund, Gottfried Helnwein, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, André Kertesz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Rauschenberg, Gus Van Sant, Andy Warhol.

Ihren einzigartigen Werken stellt The Polaroid Project mit Kameramodellen, Konzepten und Prototypen jene innovative Technik an die Seite, die diese visuelle Revolution überhaupt erst ermöglichte. Wien – dank der Initiative von Peter Coeln seit 2010 die neue Heimat der International Polaroid Collection – ist die erste Station der Ausstellung in Europa.

Here, Decadence is envisioned as a response to apocalypse, economic turmoil and the effects of late capitalism. Decadence Now!: Visions of Excess reaches back to the 1970s to examine pre-millennial rumblings of alienation, aestheticism, morbidity, pornography, intoxication and madness in the art of Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Gilbert and George, Keith Haring, Gottfried Helnwein, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Yasumasa Morimura, Catherine Opie, Zhang Peng, Pierre et Gilles, Andres Serrano, Joel-Peter Witkin, David Wojnarowicz and many others.

Two years after Beuy's death the Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein created a striking and odd image bringing Breker and Beuys together. Helnwein posed the eighty-eight-year old Breker unconfortably holding Helnwein's portrait of Beuys in front of his chest. The older man with furrowed brow directs the glossy, skeletal image of Beuys-like an icon painting-away from his own gaze and toward that of the viewer.

Affirmiert wurde dieser Uniformkult jedoch von dem Fotografen Gottfried Helnwein, der 2003 entsprechende Imagefotos für Marilyn Manson machte und an seine eigenen Werke thematisch anschloss.

Anderseits ist es Manson aufgrund dieses Geräts kaum möglich zu sprechen, sein Mund ist zu einem andauernden Schrei entstellt, was wiederum als Anspielung auf die Unterdrückung freier Meinungsäusserung und ein Redeverbot zu verstehen wäre. Zweifelsohne lehnen sich diese Einstellungen an die Selbstportraitfotografien des österreichischen Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein an. Die Ähnlichkeit der Nahaufnahme Mansons mit Mundklammer mit den drei Werken Helnweins aus der Reihe 'Der Untermensch II' mit den Titeln "Self-Portrait' (1987), The last Days of Pompeij (1987) oder auch 'Song of Deputies'(1986), auf denen Helnwein selbst mit bandagiertem Kopf und einer ähnlichen Mundklammer abgebildet ist, ist frappierend. Der durch Klammern zum Schrei aufgerissene Mund ist ein durchgängiges Motiv in Helnweins Selbstportraitarbeiten, die immer auch politisch motiviert waren. Für Helnwein ist der Schrei gleichbedeutend mit dem Aufbegehren eines menschen gegen Unterdrückung.

Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. Von dieser Krankheit erlöst zu werden durch den Tod ist eine Unmöglichkeit, denn die Krankheit und deren Qual und der Tod ist gerade, nicht sterben zu können.” So ist die Geschichte der Moderne nicht zuletzt auch eine Erfolgsgeschichte der Melancholie und des Eindringens ihres schwarzen Spuks in die letzten Paradiese des Seins- und Weltvertrauens.

Gottfried Helnwein przedsatwiający fotografie Andiego Worhola, Michaela Jacksona, interesował się także pokazywaniem aktów przemocy i jej odbiorem przez obojętne audytorium jak w "Ostatniej wieczerzy", należał w Wiedniu do grupy, która w latach 60-tych eksplorowała temat przemocy w sztuce, działając też na polu performance.

On Sunday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. the Museum of Tolerance commemorates the 65th anniversary of the infamous 1938 Nazi “Night of Broken Glass” (Kristallnacht) pogrom which targeted 1,000 synagogues in Germany and Austria and marked the beginning of the end of European Jewry. The commemoration is highlighted by the screening of a documentary by renowned Austrian artist, Gottfried Helnwein, 9th November Night, who has committed himself and his art to reminding the world of the Holocaust. The documentary is based upon his 1988 exhibit of seventeen children’s portraits that were displayed in commemoration of Kristallnacht in Cologne, Germany. Just days into the exhibit, these portraits were vandalized.. “The fury with which the neo-nazis reacted to these portraits is understandable inasmuch as it is the very same fury with which they have for years been fighting against The Diary of Anne Frank,” said famed Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. “The murder of children rouses abhorrence and conflict in every human, whether they are motivated by ideology or insanity. The urge to destroy has survived; the portraits bear witness to its rage.”

Fall of the Angels. It's a slow fall. Its actually a fall in extreme slow motion. The Book Bukowski in Pictures is the first pictorial biography of cult writer, Charles Bukowski. The writer's extraordinary private and public life is illustrated with hundreds of photographs, most published for the first time. Extracts from Bukowski's poetry and prose are sprinkled throughout, together with drawings, cartoons, manuscripts, rare broadsides and personal letters. It features powerful new portraits of Bukowski by leading photographers such as Gottfried Helnwein and Tony Lane, former art director of Rolling Stone, as well as work by R.Crumb. All photographs have detailed captions by biographer Howard Sounes who has also written a powerful introductory text with new revelations gleaned from Bukowski's recently declassified FBI file. The end result is a fascinating life in pictures that will be essential for all Bukowski fans.

Historian Peter Selz has compared Gottfried Helnwein's tortured, screaming, and bandaged self-portraits to Messerschmidt's sculptural self-portraits, but the artist has said, " The reason why I took up the subject of self-portraits and why I have put myself on stage was to function as a kind of representative for the suffering, abused and oppressed human being. I needed a living body to demonstrate and exemplify the effect of violence inflicted upon a defenseless victim. There is nothing autobiographical or therapeutical about it, and I don’t think it says anything about me personally.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert vierzig ausgewählte Statements großer Photographen des 20.Jahrhunderts: von Cartier-Bresson, Lebeck, Chargesheimer bis zu Klauke und Helnwein wird jeweils eine bedeutende künstlerische Position gezeigt. Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich nicht auf das Einzelbild, sondern komponiert ganze Werkgruppen zu großformatigen Tableaus und unterstreicht so den "journalistischen Aspekt" in der Photographie dieses Jahrhunderts. Einen Abschluß findet dieser Jahrhundertrückblick in drei künstlerischen Positionen, die in sehr persönlicher Weise Stellung zur gesellschaftlichen Situation beziehen: Jürgen Klaukes "Self Performance" (1972/73), Philip Pococks Berliner Szenen (1982) sowie Gottfried Helnweins "Poems" (1998).

Helnwein points out the new form of the modern self-portrait which involves the creator and viewer alike.

Biennale-catalogue This edition, at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti, coincided with the 150 anniversary of the birth of photography. The curator, Daniela Palazzoli, underlined the importance of the artistic value of photograpy putting aside the historical and modern section a contemporary section that hosts authors like David Hockney, Gottfried Helnwein,Clegg & Guttmann, renowned names in the artistic world.
