Disney artist Carl Barks (1901-2000) created one of Walt Disney's most famous characters, Scrooge McDuck. Barks also produced more than 500 comic book stories. His work is ranked among the most widely circulated, best-loved, and most influential of all comic book art. Although the images he created are known virtually everywhere, Barks was an isolated storyteller, living in the desert of California and preferring to labor without public fanfare during most of his career. The influence of Barks's work on such filmmakers as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and on such artists as Gottfried Helnwein has extended Barks's significance far beyond the boundaries of comics.

Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning... With its huge size, hyperrealist style, and disturbing content, this unsettling work bestows a psychological anxiety accompanied by a strong magnetic pull. Confronting it, we tend to stare-entranced by both its beauty and its seductive, malevolent overtones...

La manière la plus dialectique pour recycler, détourner, admirer et critiquer tout à la fois, demeure le médium photographique. Those who have used the same or multiple forms of the image many times over many years include Lichtenstein, Helnwein, Oldenburg, Pensato, Ospina, and Chagoya. The facade of Disney and America in the guise of the Mouse is one of the things that Helnwein and others present to us. Claes Oldenburg took the facade to its literal extreme when he proposed a flat Mouse's image for a facade to Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, and produced a flat Mouse sculpture. Helnwein, Oldenburg and others are using the Mouse to make social and cultural comments about our society, in the broadest sense, but with humor.

"Durch die zeitliche und räumliche Distanz fiel es mir auch leichter die Qualitäten Österreichs zu erkennen, und vor allem die seiner grossen kulturellen Vergangenheit. Mir ist auch klar geworden, dass meine eigene Arbeit zutiefst in dieser Tradition verwurzelt ist. Mit ihr fühle ich mich verbunden, mit Kafka, Schiele, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, Rainer, Mahler, Schubert, Haydn und Mozart, mit Künstlern wie Joseph Roth, H.C. Artmann, Wolfgang Bauer, Elfriede Jelinek. Leben würde ich in Wien jedoch nicht so gerne, denn ich erinnere mich an die vielen Intriganten, an all die freundlich grinsenden Leute, die einem sofort das Messer in den Rücken rannten, wenn man sich umdrehte. Schon als Kind wollte ich nicht in Wien leben, ich hatte bereits damals das Gefühl, am falschen Ort gelandet zu sein. Für mich hatte Wien etwas zutiefst abgründiges, bösartiges und gefährliches, das mich mit Furcht erfüllte. Ich wollte die Stadt bereits als 14jähriger verlassen, aber Wien hat so eine seltsame Gravitation - man kommt nicht los. Zwei verlorene Weltkriege und der völlige Zusammenbruch mehrerer Systeme, vor allem aber der Absturz von einem Weltreich zu einem winzigen amputierten Etwas, das damals fast völlig vom eisernen Vorhang eingeschlossen war, hat sicher zu dieser Stimmung beigetragen. Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. Von dieser Krankheit erlöst zu werden durch den Tod ist eine Unmöglichkeit, denn die Krankheit und deren Qual und der Tod ist gerade, nicht sterben zu können.” So ist die Geschichte der Moderne nicht zuletzt auch eine Erfolgsgeschichte der Melancholie und des Eindringens ihres schwarzen Spuks in die letzten Paradiese des Seins- und Weltvertrauens.

Photography and reality are inextricably linked but, whether one is being photographed, making a photograph, or looking at a photograph, photography is an act of the imagination. In nine original essays, art historians and cultural theorists break with photographic tradition to explore the crucial role of the imagination in photography from nineteenth-century studio portraiture to twenty-first-century digital innovations.

Toda la obra de Helnwein presenta originalidad. Esta es una de las características que hacen que lo podamos definir como verdadero artista; no sólo porque se ha podido apoderar de la técnica a tal punto que pareciera que le pertenece, sino porque además se ha propuesto descubrir y experimentar con distintos soportes y técnicas nuevas. En cada pieza podemos ver la reflexión que plantea sobre lo humano visto por medio del dolor y el sufrimiento; intentando hablar por medio de lo visual lo que los escritores y filósofos plantearon sobre lo utópica que es la sociedad; desmitifica los valores religiosos y cuestiona la moral.

"For me, art is a way to fight back against everything I've experienced: I wanted to respond, but I didn't know how to articulate it. But I could paint it. That medium opened all doors. Certain images can reach so deeply into people's souls. "And I feel also like a witness to my times - that's my duty, my responsibility." One role of art, he believes, is to "force people to look at things they would rather not look at," an impulse he sees in Goya and Shakespeare.

Born in Vienna in 1948, Gottfried Helnwein has developed a very powerful and idiosyncratic visual vocabulary reflected in his masterful use of multiple media (painting, drawing, photography, performance, and stage design). Helnwein addresses a broad range of social and political issues, resulting in challenging and provocative artworks. Although at times very disturbing, these works are consistently moving, and seek spiritual beauty often approaching the transcendental.

The thing you should know about this "Rosenkavalier" is that it is terrific. Richard Strauss' opera sounds great and looks sensational. It is excellently sung, sumptuously conducted by Kent Nagano and, thanks to Gottfried Helnwein, wondrously strange. Helnwein — the Austrian artist (painter, photographer, performance artist, filmmaker) who has a studio in downtown L.A. — is known for everything from Marilyn Manson videos to Holocaust installations. He is responsible for the sets, costumes and that ad (which, by the way, looks like an image from a recent staging of a Schumann oratorio that Helnwein designed in Düsseldorf). Helnwein's vision of "Rosenkavalier" is monochromatic and a riot of color. It is oddly traditional yet seriously odd. It is updated but couldn't be more 18th century. And none of those opposites contradicts.
