It’s a foggy, cloud-streaked afternoon in Waterford County, Ireland. I’m meeting a man who has spent a large part of his life on this island that is famously steeped in tradition. He’s called this place home for some while. Ireland has a long history of treating its artists, literary figures and musicians well.

LARGE-scale art installations dotted around Waterford’s city centre depicting war images are causing controversy because of their graphic content. The exhibition, The Last Child, by Austrian-born and Waterford-based artist Gottfried Helnwein, is part of the Waterford Fringe Festival and includes a variety of work placed at strategic locations in the city, such as the Quays, the Clock Tower, City Hall and John Roberts Square. Among the material featured in the images are depictions of children with guns and a child lying down, covered with blood, as well as various shots of children with their eyes closed, as if dead.

Some might think that Los Angeles - its unrelenting sun, its one-step-away-from-reality perch -- is an incongruous place for someone like Helnwein. What he creates, regardless the medium - watercolor, oil, photography, performance art, sculpture - is a thorny psychological excursion into our sublimated self, our obscured corners and dark humors. His explorations into war crimes, Catholicism, disfigurement and the Holocaust are both unflinching and surgical. His work is in museum collections around the world, including those of LACMA and the Smithsonian, and critics have labeled it grotesque, fearless, disturbing and "veer[ing] dangerously close to offensive." People are surprised, he says, when they discern that he doesn't "seem insane."

Gottfried Helnwein konzipierte und organisierte die erste Musumsausstellung des künstlerischen Werkes von Carl Barks. Von 1994 bis 1997 wurde die Retrospektive in zehn europäischen Museen gezeigt und von über 700 000 Menschen gesehen. - 2007 stellt er die Ausstellung für das Karikaturmuseum Krems neu zusammen, die nun das erste mal in Österreich gezeigt wird.

...Es steht zugleich in einer Reihe von Hommagen an zeitgenössische Künstler, die Müller zwischen 1981 und 1987 zum Teil in Briefform, zum Teil in Gestalt kurzer, dichterischer Essays, schrieb: An Mitko Gottschef, Ginka Tscholakowa, Robert Wilson, Georg Baselitz, Gottfried Helnwein und Bina Bausch.

... Vorfeld in München für einen Skandal. Die Städte-Reklame weigerte sich das Helnwein-Plakat von 'Lulu' in München aufzuhängen. Denn es zeigt den völlig entblössten Unterleib der Titelheldin. In einem Brief an Regisseur Peter Zadek und Maler Gottfried Helnwein ... In Hamburg und Wien gab es ebenfalls Proteste, aber das Helnwein-Plakat wurde nicht...

Munchs schreiendes Gesicht, das seine Spur als Anspielung unter anderem auch durch zahlreiche Werke Francis Bacons zieht, findet eines seiner deutlichsten Zitate in den Selbstportraits Gottfried Helnweins. Susanne Vil schrieb über Helnweins Selbstportrait von 1983, das den Künstler mit verbundenem Kopf und schreienden Mund zeigt: "Der Aufschrei den das stumme Medium verschweigt, bricht in jedem Betrachter selbst aus."

Anderseits ist es Manson aufgrund dieses Geräts kaum möglich zu sprechen, sein Mund ist zu einem andauernden Schrei entstellt, was wiederum als Anspielung auf die Unterdrückung freier Meinungsäusserung und ein Redeverbot zu verstehen wäre. Zweifelsohne lehnen sich diese Einstellungen an die Selbstportraitfotografien des österreichischen Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein an. Die Ähnlichkeit der Nahaufnahme Mansons mit Mundklammer mit den drei Werken Helnweins aus der Reihe 'Der Untermensch II' mit den Titeln "Self-Portrait' (1987), The last Days of Pompeij (1987) oder auch 'Song of Deputies'(1986), auf denen Helnwein selbst mit bandagiertem Kopf und einer ähnlichen Mundklammer abgebildet ist, ist frappierend. Der durch Klammern zum Schrei aufgerissene Mund ist ein durchgängiges Motiv in Helnweins Selbstportraitarbeiten, die immer auch politisch motiviert waren. Für Helnwein ist der Schrei gleichbedeutend mit dem Aufbegehren eines menschen gegen Unterdrückung.

Gottfried Helnwein's classic yet unnerving images transform sentimental representations of childhood into portraits of individual subjects frozen at the moment of suffering. His photo-paintings pirouette on the fine line between chocolate box pictures/excessive sentimentality and the cost to children of being treated as commodities, of suffering emotional or physical pain at a grown-up's hands. High pictorial and technical values create compositions that recall contemporary cinema and seventeenth-century painting, expanding the treatment of time into epic. This apparent grandiosity plays against the immediacy of each suffering subject, underlining the different experience of time in childhood. Small hurts can devastate when you're a child. Big hurts stay with you for years, as survivors of Hitler's Anschluss testify. Now, in the age of virtual use and abuse of children, Helnwein's insistence on valuing the humanity and charm of the littlest, the least powerful, offers a counterpoint to claims that suffering counts most when you're grown-up. It opens his practice into a series of pictorial mise-en-scènes, as did Rembrandt's tableaux in The Blinding of Samson (1636) or The Night Watch (1642).

Auf Handke aufmerksam gemacht wurde sie offenbar vom österreichischen Künstler Gottfried Helnwein (*1948), den mit Dietrich eine enge Freundschaft verband [Mischke 2001]. Verschlungen hat sie - im Gegensatz zum Butt von Grass - seine Werke aber trotz dieser Empfehlung keineswegs:"Der neue Star der deutschsprachigen Literatur Peter Handke.."

...Of course, Man Ray's artists portraits, and his photos in general, were just brilliant, and Helmut Newton, althought better known for his nudes, also took portraits of several artists in his unique style. Phillip Hallsman's collaboration with Dali was amazing, and Gottfried Helnwein took some stunning pictures of Warhol.
